Sweepstakes Clearinghouse – Rip-Off

28 07 2008

I make a distinction between “scam’ and a “rip-off”.  A “scam” is clearly illegal whereas a “rip-off” means a product of service is clearly over-priced or just clearly marketed to gullible people.  Sweepstakes Clearinghouse is clearly in the “rip-off” category.

My mom received an “Official Prize Award Directive” from Sweepstakes Clearinghouse (SC).  Reading the SC material carefully, I found out that my mom really didn’t win anything.  She got a $400 voucher that can be applied towards merchandise SC sells.  Two such products are Dell computers.

Dell desktop specs:

  • Refurbished Dell Optiplex series computer
  • Pentium 4 1.6GHz
  • Windows XP
  • 256MB RAM
  • 20GB HDD
  • CD-ROM
  • FDD
  • 17″ CRT monitor
  • Price: $700 – $400 = $300 net.

Dell laptop specs:

  • Refurbished Dell Latitude series computer
  • Pentium 3 750MHz
  • Windows XP
  • 256MB RAM
  • 10GB HDD
  • CD-ROM
  • Price: $780 – $400 = $380 net.

Hmmm, on one hand I can get a old refurbished computer, circa 2002.

I can spend $100 more and get an entry-level Dell computer, circa 2008.

Tough choice.  I’ll have to think about this one .. that is after I stop laughing.
